A chemical mixture or fracking fluid is used in drilling operations to increase the quantity of hydrocarbons that can be extracted
The fluid prevents corrosion of the well. It also lubricates the extraction process, prevents clogs and bacterial grows.
Ninety percent of fracking fluid is made up of water, and another 9.5% is standard sand (American Petrol Institute’s Energy Tomorrow project).
Only 0.5% of the fracking fluid is made up of chemicals, but those chemicals or specific chemicals mixture plays an important role in fracking and is very complex, varies from well to well.
Companies are not required by the federal government to disclose the chemicals being used in their frac fluid.
